The World of Publishing
In a word: brutal. If you are an unknown author, you are likely to remain so. Sorry, but that is the honest, but painful truth. If you think you've got something really good, however, then you should do your best to get published. After you navigate the maze of the publishing world, and after you get past the disillusionment, you will find that it CAN be done! But be forewarned - it won't be what you expect.
First, you will be heartbroken when you find out how little you will make on your title. For a printed book of say, 200 pages, selling for $12 US, you will be lucky to get $2.50 per copy sold, or only a few cents when sold in many markets overseas. And if a book seller chooses to stock your book on their shelves, you can expect as little as 72 cents per copy! This is true! So be ready for some harsh realities! And as if to add insult to injury, with most publishers you lose the copyright! Yes, this is also true! Copyright typically goes with the publisher, and you lose all rights to your own work!
So take great care in selecting the method to publish your book. You can do it yourself - completely; you do not need a service like Sapphire Publications, but you will find the process fairly daunting. So if you choose to seek help, our recommendation is that you: 1) Study the publishing world hard so you can be smart on the terms; 2) Select a publisher which permits you to retain copyright - after all, this is YOUR intellectual property, not theirs! 3) Select a publisher which will assign an "International Standard Book Number" to your book, simply referred to in the industry as an "ISBN". Every format of your book - print, and the various e-book formats should have its own ISBN. If not, your book cannot be identified by nor listed in catalogs; 4) Make sure you understand your royalties, and that you are on-your-own for marketing! Only the "big boys" market books for authors, and only if THEY stand to make enormous profit! For everyone else, you're on your own! Don't trust any hype from any publisher who says "they will help you market"! Marketing comes at a price, and they will not be footing the bill. Guess who will?
